Cybercrime Response

The increasing reliance of individuals and corporations on information infrastructure and the underlying communications network makes them increasingly vulnerable to multiple forms of online computer crime and abuse.  Organized groups of hackers and fraud perpetrators (including organized crime networks) recognize and mercilessly exploit structural and security weaknesses.  Recent examples of well-orchestrated cybercrime schemes include malicious code injection, click-through fraud, and extortion based on threats of hacking, denial of service, or even encryption of critical business data.  Customers are regularly tricked into revealing account names and passwords through spoofing of corporate websites and compromised communications.  Indeed, President Obama recently announced the creation of a new White House office under the Cybersecurity Coordinator to orchestrate the federal government's cybersecurity efforts, recognizing that these efforts are currently inadequate to protect the U.S. digital infrastructure and its impact on our national security and economy.
